Vice President JD Vance's wife, Usha Vance, and a US delegation will travel to Greenland on Thursday to visit historic sites and learn about the territory's heritage, the White House announced.

White House National Security Adviser Mike Waltz and Energy Secretary Chris Wright will visit a US military base in Greenland as part of the trip, a US official said.

Greenland's strategic location, as well as its rich mineral resources, could be beneficial to the US, as it is located on the shortest route from Europe to North America, a crucial position for the US ballistic missile early warning system.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said that Denmark wants to cooperate with the US, but that it should be cooperation based on "fundamental rules of sovereignty."

She added that the dialogue with the US will take place in close cooperation with the Danish government and the future government of Greenland.

Greenland's government is currently in a transitional period following the March 11 general election won by a party that favors gradual independence from Denmark, but annexation or purchase by the US.

During his first term in office from 2017 to 2021, Trump raised the idea of buying Greenland from Denmark, but officials in both countries said it was not for sale.
