Lyon coach Paulo Fonseca risks a seven-month suspension for his confrontation with referee Benoît Millot in the final seconds of Les Gones' Ligue 7 win over Brest this Sunday, as reported by RMC Sport. KosovaPress.
Fonseca was sent off and given a red card after Millot was called to look at the pitchside monitor to review a case that could have resulted in a last-minute penalty for the visitors. KosovaPress.
Fonseca then lashed out at Millot, going close to his face before Lyon midfielder Corentin Tolisso intervened.
Fonseca apologized for his actions in the post-match press conference, but the Ligue 1 Disciplinary Committee will certainly not let this latest outburst against a Ligue 1 referee go lightly. Last week, Pablo Longoria vented his fury at the referee. The Spaniard famously repeated that the league was corrupt and received a 15-match ban as a result.
Given that Fonseca was inches away from Millot, his outburst could fall under Article 8 of the LFP relating to "intimidating or threatening behavior," RMC Sport understands. The League's regulations state that "Intimidating are all words, gestures and/or attitudes that are likely to instill fear. Threatening are all words, gestures and/or attitudes that express the idea of prejudice against the physical integrity of a person. Any coach or club official found guilty of this towards an official during a game faces a 7-month ban."
After Marseille president Pablo Longoria called Ligue 1 referees corrupt last weekend, Lyon coach Paulo Fonseca steps onto the pitch and pushes his head into the Referee's after getting ?. Reports suggesting he could get a 7 month ban. We might have a problem here
