Democracy and the economy, top issues for American voters

The first exit polls show that democracy and the economy are the main issues for American voters who are choosing the new president of the United States today.

About a third of voters said democracy was the most important issue to them when deciding who to vote for. Next comes the economy.

Abortion and migration were the next most important issues and foreign policy was the least chosen option.

These are early figures and may change, writes CNN according to CBS reports.

The economy has previously topped the list of issues motivating voters and has ranked first in exit polls for every presidential election since 2008.

To choose the new president - in a race between Democrat Kamala Harris and Republican Donald Trump - millions of Americans are voting in the United States.

Among people who voted for Kamala Harris, nearly six in 10 people listed the state of democracy as their number one issue.

This was followed by abortion, with just over one in 10 choosing the economy.

Meanwhile, among Donald Trump voters, half said the economy was their number one issue.

One in five said migration was a key issue. Just over one in 10 people said they cared more about the state of democracy.

American citizens today also elect new members of Congress.

The first polling stations close at 18:00 or midnight Kosovo time, while the last polling stations in the USA close at 01:00 or the morning of November 6 Kosovo time.

Voting is extended in two precincts in North Carolina

The North Carolina Board of Elections has held an emergency meeting and approved an extra half hour to vote in two precincts that were said to be temporarily unavailable to voters early Tuesday due to technical problems, CNN reports.

The two different areas, one in Burke County, in the western region of the state, and the other in Wilson County, east of Raleigh, will now close at 8 pm local time in the US.

State Board of Elections spokesman Patrick Gannon said the Wilson County polling place had "some printer issues that caused voters to be unable to vote for an hour or so."

A problem with a laptop in Burke contributed to a delay at a polling place Tuesday morning, local elections director Kenny Rhyne said.

Speaking on the phone with some citizens, she called on them to vote, reports CNN.

"I'm fine," Harris was heard telling a citizen on the phone.

"I just wanted to call you and make sure you know where you can go vote today if you haven't already."
