A 16-year-old German tourist died after a fall while hiking in the northern Italian ski resort of San Candido on Friday, sources said Saturday.

Her body was found at the bottom of a ravine, and police said she probably died of cold rather than injuries.

The girl, whose identity has not been released, is believed to have slipped on the ice after going out without her family, who were staying at their rented mountain lodge.

An autopsy conducted today found evidence that the girl had indeed frozen to death.

Her body will be returned to Germany. / ANSA
