French President Emmanuel Macron hosted US President-elect Donald Trump at the Elysee Palace today, ahead of a ceremony to mark the opening of the restored Notre-Dame cathedral five years after it was destroyed by fire.

The trip to France marks Trump's return to the world stage, although he is still a private citizen, but is preparing to face a series of international crises.

The Elysée Palace also announced that Trump will hold trilateral talks in Paris with French President and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, who met together upon arriving at the Elysee Palace.

It is Trump's first trip abroad since winning the presidential election and could offer Macron an early opportunity to play the role of mediator between Europe and the unpredictable American politician, a role the French leader has enjoyed in the past.

Trump told Macron they had enjoyed "really great success" working together during his first term. "And it certainly seems like the world is going a little crazy right now. And we're going to talk about that," Trump continued.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he had a "good and productive tripartite meeting" with Trump and Macron.

"We all want this war to end as soon as possible and fairly," Zelensky said on X, adding that the three countries have agreed to continue working together.

Zelensky also said of the president-elect: "President Trump is, as always, determined."

Trump and Zelensky were initially set to hold back-to-back separate talks with Macron.

Trump will join dozens of world leaders and foreign dignitaries in a ceremony to reopen Notre-Dame cathedral five and a half years after it was destroyed by fire. Trump will also meet with British Prince William.

Although Trump will not be sworn in as US president until January 20, he has already held talks with a number of world leaders and members of his team are trying to get to grips with a growing number of global crises, including Ukraine and Middle East.

US First Lady Jill Biden, wife of President Joe Biden, will represent the United States at the opening of Notre-Dame.
