Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has signaled a "mega partnership" with the United States, as he and US President Donald Trump struck a deal for Delhi to import American oil and gas.
Modi visited the US for two days, while Trump ordered new tariffs on trading partners, including India. During the meeting, Trump criticized India for its high trade tariffs, while Modi spoke out for lowering them, repatriating migrants and buying American fighter jets.
At a joint conference, Modi coined the slogan "Make India Great Again, MIGA," linking it to Trump's "MAGA," calling it a "mega partnership for prosperity."
Trump highlighted energy and arms deals, adding that India would buy more oil and gas to reduce the trade deficit.
"They need it, and we have it," Trump said, BBC News reports.On immigration, the US deported 104 illegal Indians and a second group is expected. Trump also announced the extradition of a suspect in the Mumbai terror attack.
Meanwhile, the US removed exemptions from steel and aluminium tariffs and plans new tariffs on trading partners, arguing they will help US industry and jobs. Tariffs on India are expected in the future, while analysts warn of economic impacts from higher US oil and gas prices.
