According to Tuttosport, former Juventus and Italy defender Leonardo Bonucci could join Luciano Spalletti's backroom staff following a disappointing Euro 2024 campaign for the Azzurri.
The former center back of Italy, Bonucci, can return to the national team, becoming a member of Spalletti's staff, KosovaPress reports.
Bonucci met with Spalletti and several Italy players, including Riccardo Calafiori, after the 1-1 draw against Croatia in the Euro 2024 group stage.
It is said that Bonucci and Spalletti respect each other and the idea to add the former defender to the staff of the "Azzurri" is concrete. A former Juventus, AC Milan and Bari defender, Bonucci announced his retirement from football in May after spending his final season at Union Berlin and Fenerbahce.
It's no secret that he wants to stay in football and become a coach. Therefore, he is highly motivated to join Spalletti's staff to get his first experience as part of a backroom staff.
Former Italian midfielder Daniele De Rossi did the same throughout 2021 and 2022 as part of Roberto Mancini's staff in Italy before becoming a coach, first at SPAL and then at Roma.
Bonucci made 121 appearances for Italy, scoring eight goals and winning Euro 2021.
On the other hand, Bonucci's former teammate at Juventus, Gigi Buffon may leave the national team and will soon discuss his future as head of delegation with the federation.
