Prime Minister Alexander De Croo warned today that no Syrian in Belgium will go back until stability is achieved in Syria.

De Croo made the remarks on the European debate on the "return of Syrians" that began after the overthrow of Bashar al-Assad's regime last Sunday, according to Belgian news agency Belga.

"When the situation stabilizes, we have a responsibility to ensure that people can return safely in accordance with international agreements. But today that is not the case," he said.

Expressing satisfaction at the overthrow of the regime, De Croo noted that the situation "remains very volatile" in Syria.

De Croo pointed to the need for a peaceful transition process, representative government and respect for territorial integrity in Syria, stressing that Israel's bombing of the country "must stop immediately".

After Assad's fall, several EU countries, including Belgium, announced they would review pending asylum applications from Syrians or have already suspended them.

Belgium announced on December 9 that it would temporarily freeze asylum applications from Syrians, although no information was given on how long the measure would last.

Syrians are among the main candidates for asylum in Belgium. About 35.000 Syrians have received asylum in Belgium since the beginning of the civil war in Syria in 2011. /AA
