Almost a quarter of a century after its signing, the Ohrid Agreement is being brought back to the attention of the international factor. The Democratic Union for Integration (BDI) in the opposition, has raised concerns that North Macedonia may "return to periods of uncertainty with the executive's decisions to change or revise the Law on the Use of Languages".
The leader of DUI, Ali Ahmeti, has sent a letter to the international and leaders of Kosovo and Albania for "the protection of the Ohrid Agreement and the rights of Albanians", writes KosovaPress.
"Plans for the repeal of the Law on the use of languages, the prohibition of identification of ethnic affiliation in state institutions and the formation of a governing majority without fair representation of ethnic communities", are the three points that, according to Ahmeti, endanger the principles of equality and stability in a state multiethnic
Connoisseurs of the political circumstances, while talking about KosovaPress, consider that there should be a reaction from Prishtina and official Tirana.
According to them, the recent developments in North Macedonia endanger the achievements of the Albanians so far.
"The new executive has taken some steps that seem to call into question what has been achieved so far and that turns out to be a signal to go back when it comes to what Albanians have achieved so far", he says in a statement to KosovaPress from Skopje, Seladin Xhezairi.
He considers that these developments will produce tension in the political scene of North Macedonia.
The analyst from Albania, Ben Andoni, tells KosovaPress that the Albanians in Macedonia now need support from Kosovo and Albania.
"The reaction will be extremely lukewarm and it will be just to wash the mouth", says Andoni.
The law on the use of languages in North Macedonia obliges state institutions to allow the official use of languages spoken by at least 20 percent of citizens. This is also about the Albanian language.
In North Macedonia, about 30 percent of the population are Albanians, out of about 2 million inhabitants of the country.
Regarding the Law on languages, the Constitutional Court of North Macedonia is expected to decide in December of this year.
DUI's vice president, Arbër Ademi, while speaking for KosovaPress, says that the Constitutional Court is implementing the election program of VMRO-DPMNE. The latter leads the government of North Macedonia from the middle of this year, while in the coalition there is the VLEN, which consists of Albanians.
For this, Ahmeti of DUI - through the letter - has notified the president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, the French president, Emmanuel Macron, and the American secretary of state, Antony Blinken.
According to DUI, the letter was also sent to the President and Prime Minister of Albania, Bajram Begaj and Edi Rama, as well as to the President of Kosovo, Vjosa Osmani and Prime Minister Albin Kurti.
There is still no official reaction to this letter.

The leader of DUI, Ali Ahmeti, has also sent a letter to Prime Minister Hrisitjan Mickoski.
The latter told the media on Monday that he has not seen the letter, but according to him, Ahmet's letter "must be given importance" like any letter that comes from citizens.
Among other things, in the letter, Ahmeti said any attempt to question the Ohrid Agreement is a step that could worsen the situation in the country and the region.
Meanwhile, Bilall Kasami of VLEN, who is part of the government, wrote on Monday on Facebook that "until Aliu sends letters up and down, we are advancing every Albanian issue, which his party blocked and in their name deceived the Albanians".
The Ohrid Agreement was signed in 2001 with the mediation of the international factor and after several days of intensive negotiations in Skopje.
The document, which is known as a contract between Albanians and Macedonians, ended an armed conflict in Macedonia at that time./Sh. Pajaziti
