The chairman of the Democratic Union for Integration, Ali Ahmeti considers that the government of Kosovo should not remain silent regarding the concerns of the Albanians in North Macedonia. On the eve of the meeting of the two governments, which will be held today in Pristina, Ahmeti calls on the Kosovar executive to talk to the Macedonian prime minister regarding the problems of the Albanians there.
The head of DUI has expressed concern about non-compliance with the Ohrid Agreement, after the initiatives to repeal the Law on the use of languages.
"I have addressed a call, an appeal to the Government of Kosovo to communicate the concerns of the Albanians of Macedonia to the Prime Minister of North Macedonia and I have appealed to all political parties in Kosovo to consider the concerns of the Albanians of of North Macedonia, on the attempts made to change the language law, change the agreement, the substance of the Ohrid peace agreement, and I hope that this appeal reaches the ears of the state institutions, but also to the leaders of the political parties in Kosovo who not to be indifferent, because our historical efforts have been joint, in terms of securing freedom, building the state of Kosovo and in terms of the political and legal status of the Albanians of the Republic of Macedonia", he added.
The law on the use of languages in North Macedonia obliges state institutions to allow the official use of languages spoken by at least 20 percent of citizens. This is also about the Albanian language.
There, about 30 percent of the population are Albanians, out of about 2 million inhabitants of the state.
Regarding the Law on languages, the Constitutional Court of North Macedonia is expected to decide in December of this year.
The discussion about it comes after VMRO-DPMNE came to power there, which was against this law.
"In North Macedonia, the political developments do not promise any stable perspective, because there have been several initiatives to change the Law of the Albanian language, which this initiative reminds me of 1989 when Milosevic suppressed the autonomy of Kosovo, which is not good for the Macedonian community and Albanians... Because the substance, the core of the Ohrid peace agreement with the changes they claim to make on the law and the use of the Albanian language in the Republic of North Macedonia, is removing ethnicity, which is also part of the substance of the Ohrid peace agreement, because without ethnicity and the declaration of ethnicity, dozens of reasons can be found why Albanians are not professionally prepared and are left to be marginalized, in fact the majority's dominance is being installed over the second Albanian community in North Macedonia and these developments are worrying for us", said Ahmeti.
The Ohrid Agreement was signed in 2001 with the mediation of the international factor and after several days of intensive negotiations in Skopje.
The document known as the contract between Albanians and Macedonians ended an armed conflict in Macedonia at the time.
According to Ahmeti, the actions of the government there are jeopardizing this agreement.
For KosovaPress, Ahmeti also talks about the problems faced by veterans of the Kosovo Liberation Army who cross the border of North Macedonia.
According to Ahmeti, state institutions should make political and diplomatic efforts so that Kosovo becomes a member of INTERPOL and commit to the maximum so that former KLA soldiers are not mistreated.
"The institutions must commit that Kosovo and its institutions, in the first place, must make diplomatic political efforts, so that Kosovo becomes a member of INTERPOL because Serbia is a member of INTERPOL, they made the denunciations to INTERPOL. They are necessarily obliged to respect the decisions of the center and all states are obliged to respect the decisions of the respective states that are members of INTERPOL. Institutions must be maximally engaged so that the soldiers of the Kosovo Liberation Army are not mistreated and this work remains an institutional work", says Ahmeti.
Regarding the issue of Albanians in Skopje, Ali Ahmeti weeks ago sent a letter to European leaders and those in the region.
Ahmeti has raised concerns that North Macedonia may "return to periods of uncertainty" with the executive's decisions to change or revise the Law on the use of languages.
The governments of Kosovo and North Macedonia will hold a joint meeting today, where several agreements are expected to be signed.
The meeting will be held in Kosovo.
