Gjirokastra is increasingly ranking among the elite cities of Albanian tourism, attracting an increasing number of tourists every year, most of whom are foreigners.
Even though we are in the winter season, the cobblestone streets, the castle, other cultural monuments, and the city's surroundings are filled with visitors.
The mayor of Gjirokastra, Flamur Golemi, said: ATSH-that "the city of Gjirokastra and its surroundings have welcomed visitors during the winter season, with 10 thousand tourists registered. We now have sustainable tourism development in Gjirokastra and visitor numbers extend throughout the year."
"Meanwhile, the city's museums such as the Ethnographic, "Kadare", "Tunnel" and the museum in "Kala" were visited by 10 thousand visitors during the months of January and February," said Golemi.
Golemi stated that "the ever-increasing flow of visitors to the city, protected by UNESCO, is further engaging local structures to further enrich the tourist guide, making Gjirokastra one of the main tourism hotspots in the country."Also, said Golemi, the development of sustainable tourism is positively impacting the local economy, not only in tourism-related businesses, but in the overall economic activity of the southern region.
The Municipality of Gjirokastra, in addition to a large number of activities, is preparing for the summer season.
"We are preparing leaflets to inform visitors coming to the city, which reflect maps and tourist spots they should visit, to facilitate their movement around the city," said Golemi.
Among the most favorite destinations for visitors to Gjirokastra are the characteristic bazaar, the various characteristic dwellings, and the city's museums, which continue to remain the most special to be visited by local and foreign tourist groups.
During 2024, Gjirokastra was visited by over 700 thousand domestic and foreign tourists, being considered a prominent value on the national and international map of sustainable and quality tourism.
