Today marks seven years since the Kosovo Assembly approved the demarcation with Montenegro.
On the afternoon of March 21, 2018, with 80 votes in favor, 11 against and no abstentions, the Assembly approved the demarcation after four interruptions due to tear gas fired by Vetëvendosje. Due to the tear gas fired that day, most VV MPs were expelled from the session, reports KosovaPress.
The process of approving the demarcation lasted three years and was preceded by a great debate, protests and numerous reactions from citizens, politicians and internationals.
Kosovo and Montenegro signed the demarcation agreement in Vienna, Austria, in 2015. However, until its ratification in the Assembly, Kosovo went through various unrest. At that time, the opposition opposed the demarcation through protests and tear gas in the Assembly.
This agreement became one of the main conditions of the state of Kosovo for visa liberalization and was not voted on by MPs until the moment when the President of Kosovo, Hashim Thaçi, and his Montenegrin counterpart, Filip Vujanović, issued a joint statement which foresees the review and correction of any possible errors.
