On December 14, 2018, the Parliament of Kosovo, with 106 votes in favor and one abstention, approved three laws that change the mandate of the Kosovo Security Force (FSK) to the Kosovo Army, but without changing its name.

The approved laws were the Draft Law for the Ministry of Defense, the Draft Law for the Kosovo Security Force and the Draft Law for service in the Kosovo Security Force. Serbian MPs in the Parliament of Kosovo did not participate in the session, as they were against the formation of the Kosovo Army.

On March 4, 2014, the Government of Kosovo took the decision to form the Armed Forces of Kosovo, as the army of Kosovo, which is expected to reach the capacity to ensure the integrity of Kosovo, reports KosovaPres.

This came five years after on January 20, 2009, the TMK, which was founded at the time of the country's inception, officially disbanded into the KSF.

The Kosovo Security Force initially had the responsibility to deal with severe natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods or fires.
