Milorad Grčić, the mayor of Obrenovci, was arrested today in an operation by the Ministry of Interior and the High Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade.
In addition to him, 14 other people have been arrested, said the chief prosecutor of the High Public Prosecutor's Office in Belgrade, Nenad Stefanović.
They are suspected of abusing their official position and authority in connection with public procurement for the Serbian Electric Company EPS and damaging it for more than one million euros, for which they obtained illegal material benefits, Stefanović said.
A large amount of cash was allegedly seized during the arrest, as well as jewelry, gold, and watches.
Grčić is a member of the Serbian Progressive Party. He was appointed acting director of the Kolubara Regional Reserve on 8 October 2012. He held this position until December 2015, when he became director of the EPS Social Responsibility Office. He is a member of the Board of Directors of the Belgrade Chamber of Commerce.
On March 15, 2016, the Serbian Government appointed him acting director of EPS, until the end of the competition for the election of the director of that company. After several accidents at EPS, he resigned on January 12, 2022, and two days later the Serbian Government officially dismissed him.
In 2022, Grčić was appointed assistant to the mayor of Obrenovci, Miroslav Čučković. At the end of December 2022, he was re-elected chairman of the SNS Municipal Board in Obrenovci, and in July 2024 he was elected mayor of Obrenovci.
