The Kosovo Police Inspectorate has provided details regarding last night's fatal accident, in which five people lost their lives and four police officers were injured.

According to a statement from the inspectorate, their investigators were notified by the Kosovo Police last night at around 19:00 PM about a traffic accident involving an official police vehicle and a civilian vehicle.

"After receiving the information, PIK investigators went to the scene, joining other police teams and the prosecution in examining the scene. The accident is reported to have occurred on the regional road Mitrovica - Peja in the village of Çubrel at 18:40. Based on the initial investigative actions, it is suspected that the accident occurred as a result of the driver of the official police vehicle not adjusting the speed of the vehicle to the road conditions, who crossed into the opposite lane, hitting the civilian vehicle. As a result of the accident, three people (who were in the civilian vehicle), one male and two females, unfortunately died. The bodies of the three victims have been sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine for autopsy. Four police officers and one citizen from the civilian vehicle suffered serious bodily injuries and were taken to the UCCK for medical treatment," the announcement states.

As part of the administrative procedures and in the interest of the investigation, PIK has recommended the suspension of the police officer who was driving the official police vehicle at the time of the accident, while investigative actions are being taken regarding the accident in coordination with the competent prosecutor.
