Former Milan defender Ignazio Abate was sacked and then rehired by Serie C side Ternana after a reported disagreement with the club's senior hierarchy over his decision to leave the president's son off the club's squad list.

Abate, who made over 300 appearances for Milan before managing the U16 and Primavera teams after hanging up his boots, was appointed as Ternana coach after leaving the red and black youth sector in the summer.

Ternana is currently in second place in Group B of Serie C after 25 matches, three points behind division leader Virtus Entella, KosovaPress reported.

Despite a strong start to the 2024-25 season, Abate was fired and then rehired almost immediately after a reported dispute involving the president and his son.

According to local reports, cited by Calciomercato.com, the coach was initially dismissed by Ternana for not including Mattya D'Alessandro in the squad. The player in question is the son of the club's president.

There was reportedly an agreement to allow 20-year-old D'Alessandro to go out on loan to gain experience at a senior level, but that didn't happen and it cost Abate his job for a short time.

Ternana confirmed the dismissal and that Fabio Liverani would come in as a replacement at around 20pm local time on Thursday night.

However, according to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the players requested an urgent meeting with the club's management and the former coach, and around three hours later, Abate emerged as Ternana's head coach once again.
