Artan Abazi, from INDEP brought an analysis of traffic safety policies developed by this institute, where in detail were reflected the aspects related to traffic safety. In this occasion Abazi stressed that traffic safety continues to be one of unaddressed challenges in Kosovo.
According to him, the problems that Kosovo citizens are dealing with in this area are those of basic nature.
"This discussion paper aims to expose the current situation in terms of traffic safety policies, laws regulating this sector and their implementation.
This paper illustrates the competency of the responsible institutions in this sector, its practices of applicability of policies and laws, and the vision for their change and improvement " said Abazi elaborating in particular, the legal framework, the role and competencies of relevant institutions, the infrastructure of traffic in Kosovo, the registration of vehicles, accidents, police fines with causes of accidents, the system of punishment (points) etc.
Regional traffic commander, Captain Maliq Hajdini, said that police policies deal with the prevention of accidents and loss of life. According to him, there are numerous causes that lead to accidents, such as the large number of vehicles in traffic, roads, speed, inadequate manipulation with vehicles, not keeping the distance between vehicles, etc. "In this period we have a reduction of accidents with fatalities, while the number of other accidents was increased," said Hajdini.
A journalist Afrim Demiri, has requested greater enforcement of competencies of responsible persons that directly deal with traffic and performing of all institutional work, and has asked the freeing of pedestrian paths and the empowerment of green areas around schools.
Also other debaters have raised the need to be worked more in this area, especially in raising public awareness of the danger in traffic. In the end was raised the need for greater enforcement of the penalization through the points, a system which is not implemented and constitutes the main challenge in creation of an ideal mechanism to prevent the increase of accidents in the country, and the initiative for including of green areas near the school in the traffic policy.
